🔧 The Challenge: A Yard Cut to the Bone

Not long ago, I was contacted by a homeowner in a state of distress. Their insurance company had refused to renew their policy unless all trees and shrubs within 10 feet of the house were removed. In response, they hired a landscaper—who took a chainsaw-first approach and left behind a yard that looked more like a construction site than a home garden. My job was restoring a landscape that was in disarray.
🌿 Our Design Vision: Natural Beauty with Embellishments

The homeowner reached out to JSL Landscape Design with one request: “Can you bring our yard back to life?”
I saw it as an opportunity of not only restoring a landscape, but to do so in a way that complied with fire safety guidelines while enhancing the home’s curb appeal and ecological health.
🪴 Key Elements of the Restoration

A sample of the low-growing, fire-safe, and pollinator-friendly plants used within the 10-foot zone.
We focused on:
✅ Selective Planting – Inside the 10-foot buffer zone, we used low-growing perennials, ornamental grasses, and groundcovers that offer visual texture without becoming fire risks.
✅ Organic Flow – Instead of rigid lines, we sculpted soft, natural curves into planting beds, mimicking the rhythm of nature.
✅ Visual Balance – Native plants can get over grown so we used both native shrubs and adaptive shrubs that provided low growing colorful foliage with spikey upright structure to provide contrast and balance.
✅ Color & Seasonality – We designed for year-round interest with native plants offering blooms in spring, structure in winter, and habitat for pollinators all year.
🌅 The Final Result: Peace, Privacy, and Beauty Restored

The transformation was dramatic—not just in appearance, but in how the homeowner felt about their space. What began as an insurance compliance issue became an opportunity for restoring a l something thoughtful, sustainable, and beautiful.
💬 From the Homeowner
“We were so happy with every aspect of the project and John was available during the construction to oversee the work. Everything went smoothly.”
