Outdoor fireplaces and fire features encompass a wide variety of styles. The main difference is whether they are custom built or prefabricated units ready to be assembled on your property.

Gas or Wood Burning?

Check with your local codes about whether you can have a wood burning fire pit or outdoor fireplace. Some HOA regulations prohibit wood burning fire features. Some counties in Arizona prohibit burning wood on “no burn days” due to smog conditions in the winter.

Gas is cleaner to burn than wood and requires no replenishment of logs and has no ashes, and is relatively maintenance free. But the sound of a crackling fire and the dancing flames are what is attractive with a wood burning unit. Also, when designing around a contemporary theme, gas fire pits are usually the best option.
